Before the Choice
The shortlist may already exist before we begin looking.
Every form of discovery has its gatekeepers. Shop windows, critics, directories and search engines have all decided, in different ways, what enters our field of vision. We learned to recognize those filters, negotiate with them and occasionally work around them.
AI introduces a gatekeeper that feels less visible because it presents its selections as conversation. We ask for guidance and receive a small, plausible world in return. What remains outside that world may never be considered—not because it was rejected, but because it was never brought into view.
For companies, this is not merely a new marketing channel. It is a change in where choices begin. The question is no longer only how to persuade people once they arrive, but how to avoid disappearing before the decision has even started.
