Stop Prompting. Start Delegating.
The next step in using AI is not asking better questions. It is learning which pieces of work you can safely hand over.
For most people, AI still begins with a blank box.
We ask for a summary. A draft. An analysis. Some ideas. Then we read the answer, make corrections and continue working ourselves.
That is useful. But it is increasingly becoming the old model of AI use.
The more consequential shift is from assistance to delegation: giving the machine a defined objective, the information it needs, access to the appropriate tools and enough autonomy to complete a bounded piece of work.
The distinction matters.
“Help me analyze these customer complaints” is assistance.
“Review this week’s customer complaints, classify them into our existing categories, identify anything that appears more than five times and prepare a one-page summary for me to review” is delegation.
The second instruction does something important: it creates a small operational system around the model.
It defines the input. It defines the task. It defines the threshold for attention. And, critically, it defines where the human comes back into the process.
That last part is becoming more important as AI gains access to browsers, documents, applications and company systems. Autonomy without boundaries is not sophistication. It is simply uncontrolled automation.
The useful question, then, is no longer:
What can AI do for me?
It is:
What can I hand over completely — and where do I want it to stop?
THE PRACTICAL TIP
Pick one repetitive task you perform every week.
Write down four things:
INPUT — What information does the AI need?
ACTION — What exactly should it do?
BOUNDARY — What is it not allowed to decide or change?
OUTPUT — What finished result should come back to you?
Then try delegating that task instead of merely asking the AI to help with it.
If you still have to reconstruct most of the work afterward, the problem may not be the model.
The task probably wasn't defined well enough.
That is the emerging AI skill: not prompting.
